Fifth Fire Safety Council in India

UL in India held the fifth UL Fire Safety Council meeting Oct. 23 – 24, 2013, in Mumbai.

The event brought together key decision makers, influencers, technical experts and professionals from leading corporations, industry associations, and academia along with executives from UL. Attendees included representatives from Forensic Fire Analysis, LLC; Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, School of Planning & Architecture; Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD); USG Corporation Innovation Center; Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC); National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); Narayana Hrudayalaya; ITC Hotels; Taj Hotels & Palaces; K Raheja Developers; and Accenture. The two-day meeting provided ample networking and learning opportunities in the area of fire safety.

In his opening address, Suresh Sugavanam, UL’s managing director for South Asia, spoke about UL’s mission and the important role that safety councils play. Gus Schaefer, UL senior vice President and public safety officer, spoke about the history of the council in the United States and UL’s role in creating safe living and working environments through the application of safety science and hazard-based safety engineering.

While discussions on day one revolved around workplace safety, the focus of the second day was safety in the built environment. Both days featured interesting panel discussions on topics spanning forensic studies, building safety, changes in codes and more.
